Insurance woes likely source of Ronnie Dowdy shut down

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website, Ronnie Dowdy Inc.’s insurance is scheduled to be canceled on March 1.

The weekend buzz in the trucking industry was that the company was closing its doors. On Saturday, Feb. 4, personnel at the Batesville headquarters declined to comment on the company’s problems. As of press time, Land Line’s phone calls and emails to the trucking company have been unsuccessful.

Lance Wood, founder of Trucker Charity Inc., a nonprofit organization that helps get drivers home in emergency situations, told Land Line on Monday, that he called the company in Batesville on Saturday.

“I called and spoke with someone there, gave them our phone number and told them we have resources available to them if their drivers need help. But the comment I received back from the gentleman was that he would take care of his own drivers,” Wood said.

Ronnie Dowdy Inc’s website states that the company has 225 trailers and 170 power units, but does not appear to have been updated in a while. However, according to the FMCSA website, the carrier’s registration listed 62 power units and 62 drivers on Aug. 16, 2011.

The company also had a lease-purchase program, but no information was provided about how many drivers participated in the program.
